THE TOP COAT: Marcela & Norma

If you don't follow Marcela of @Mexicanbutjapanese and Norma of @platinumpunk, you may recognize them from their Mother's Day IG Live Cirque Colors takeover or one of their appearances on Glossier's Instagram feed. "We are a daughter-mother duo who love beauty products and are always looking to try the next/new beauty trend/product! We also both enjoy hunting for vintage treasures, going to the Metropolitan Opera or Carnegie Hall, treating ourselves to a spa day, and spending time with family—I have two more sisters and we are all very close with each other and our mom!" Marcela How would you describe your personal style vs your mom's?  I'm a bit more classic and not as adventurous as my mom. I admire how playful and open she is. I love that she doesn't care what people think about her style. All she cares is that she likes it. What's your earliest memory of nail polish? How did you get into it?  Via my sister Adriana. She's a nail person. She would always toss over colors and say pick one. Also, every time we go into a pharmacy she buys one. I do the same with chapstick—can't have too many! What's your favorite part of being on the Glossier Training Team?  I love that I get to talk/think/train all things surrounding new products. You said after your husband banned you from baking a few years ago, you've been getting back into it. How has that been going?  Yes, he did for our safety/to not burn down the house. It has been great because one, I decided to fully stick to the recipe, two, because I only baked one thing: the magnolia birthday cake. I have made it 3 times. I know you don't consider yourself a "blogger." How did you start as a... "content creator"? And what term would you use?  I started creating how-to training videos and decided to post them on my own IG. Friends kept asking me for more/thoughts on specific products/techniques and I just kept going! I don't have a term. I'm just a regular woman who loves beauty/skincare products. We both used to work for Estée Lauder Companies. What was your job there and your relationship with the company?  I worked at BECCA and was the Global Product Training Manager and it was a dream, so much fun, but a lot of hard work. Tell us about your vintage treasure collecting!  This also began with my mom's influence. She would take me to the flea market in Mexico when I was a little girl and we'd have lunch (gorditas) and then just treasure hunt. We love doing this and we have continue to vintage hunt all of these years! What's your favorite kind of content to make?  Makeup looks. However, I really enjoy catching my husband doing funny things and then posting on IG! What are your top 3 Cirque Colors polishes?BAM, Organza and Cool Blast. Norma Who are your favorite artists?  Michangelo Bonarotti (Painter), Jose Carreras (Opera singer) and Cervantes (Author). How would you describe your personal style vs your daughter's?  My personal style is experimental. I love to try new styles and I want it to be fun! I know you love IGK 's Pink Ombre Spray! What's your relationship with your hair?  My hair is important, because it frames my face and my expressions. And also, it is another medium for me to experiment with color and texture. You've done nail art looks like Monet's Water Lilies! What's your relationship like with nail polish now vs when it was new to you?  I think I began using nail polish when I was about three years old. I think at the time, there was only red. I always painted them red. I guess there wasn't much variety then. Now, there's so much variety in colors and finishes, now doing my nails is/feels artistic and is a fun activity for me. What do you do for a living/have you done?  Now, I am retired, but I was entrepreneur and had my own business of vinyl goods. Your daughter, Marcela, says you're a bad influence to shop with because you encourage her to buy everything! What's your shopping philosophy?  If you like it, buy it! How has your approach to beauty changed over time?  Well in the past, society dictated/set parameters of what was beauty/beautiful. But now, what beauty is, is up to you. The beauty industry has opened up a lot and you are free to express that however you want. What are your hobbies?  I'm a big Opera fan. So, I go to the Opera as much as I can. I love piano concertos, too. So, I also go the piano concertos often.  What are your top 3 Cirque Colors polishes?Mystic Moonstone, Linen, Very Valentino and Prima Donna.
